Madrid to Málaga Train: Tickets, Prices & Connections

The Madrid to Málaga train normally links Madrid Puerta de Atocha–Almudena Grandes with Málaga María Zambrano. Renfe, iryo and OUIGO serve this corridor. For a Costa del Sol trip, compare the entire journey to your accommodation, including the local transfer after arrival in Málaga.
Málaga city, the airport or the Costa del Sol?
Choose your final destination before deciding which arrival suits you. A train to Málaga María Zambrano finishes the intercity leg; an airport, resort or coastal hotel requires its own onward plan. Check the local service and the stop closest to your accommodation. Do not treat a Costa del Sol town name as proof of a direct rail connection.
For a Málaga to Madrid return, use the required Madrid arrival time to work backwards through local transport and boarding. Compare the full ticket price with any additional luggage you need for a beach holiday. If you are catching a separately booked flight, allow for disruption and check what protection, if any, covers the two bookings.
Pick the right train for your arrival plans
Check the actual departure, arrival and duration for your travel date. A direct service means you do not change trains, but it may still make intermediate stops. Do not assume that every train completes the route in the fastest advertised time, or that yesterday’s first and last departures will apply to your trip.
If you want to visit Córdoba on the way, search Madrid–Córdoba and Córdoba–Málaga as separate legs. A through ticket does not automatically allow you to leave the train for sightseeing and resume later. If your destination is elsewhere on the coast, compare the availability of onward transport before choosing a late arrival.
Atocha to Málaga María Zambrano
Leaving Madrid
Use the booked station’s full name when arranging a taxi or local transport. Atocha and Chamartín are different stations; an arrival at one does not place you at the other. Allow for station navigation, security screening where required and the operator’s boarding deadline. If you are arriving at Madrid airport first, plan that transfer separately and allow for flight delays.
Arriving in Málaga
María Zambrano is Málaga’s main station for this long-distance journey. It is not the same stop as Málaga Centro-Alameda. Check the onward route to the historic centre, beach or hotel instead of assuming your accommodation is beside the arrival station.
Cercanías line C-1 serves Málaga airport and continues along the coast to Fuengirola. This is a local rail service, not a Media Distancia train. Check its current timetable, direction and ticket requirements. A long-distance ticket does not automatically establish that every local transfer is included. Marbella is not a C-1 destination; plan a suitable bus or road transfer for that part of the coast.
Compare baggage and the full fare
Renfe, iryo and OUIGO have different fare products and baggage rules. Check the included number of bags, their dimensions and weight, and any charge for extra or larger items. There is no universal “unlimited weight” rule for this route, and a suitcase acceptable with one fare may need an extra option with another.
Compare the final amount for all passengers after seat selection, luggage and any booking fees. If a flight or hotel plan may change, read the fare’s change deadline, penalty and possible fare difference. Check cancellation conditions separately: the word “premium” or “flexible” is not enough to establish a refund right.
For assistance or a special travel requirement, confirm the arrangements with the relevant operator before committing to a fare. Keep the operator’s ticket available offline and use your train number on the station boards. Search Madrid to Málaga trains to see supplier-available options for your date.
Booking through SpanishTrain
SpanishTrain, operated by WISE UP LIMITED, is an independent booking intermediary, not a railway operator or an authorised agent of the operators. Search results depend on supplier availability and may not include every operator or departure. The current service accepts adults aged 18 or over, with a maximum of four passengers per booking.
- Search your date and check both station names, the operator, stops and arrival time.
- Review the total price, baggage allowance and change or cancellation conditions before paying. Enter passenger details exactly as required for their travel documents.
- After payment, the request is reviewed and fulfilled manually. Payment is not an issued ticket, and no fixed ticket delivery time is guaranteed.
- Once the official operator e-ticket arrives by email, check the journey, passenger details, coach and seat. Keep it available for boarding with the required identification. If it has not arrived, contact support; a payment receipt is not valid for travel.
