Train Travel in Spain: Tickets, Routes & Planning

Train Travel in Spain: Tickets, Routes & Planning

Planning diagram; check the current conditions of your selected ticket.

Planning train travel in Spain starts with three decisions: the cities you want to visit, the exact stations used by each train, and the ticket conditions you need. A railway map is useful for orientation, but a line between cities does not establish a direct service, a daily timetable or a through ticket. Check each journey for your travel date before arranging accommodation and connections.

Plan Spain by train in four decisions

Start with the cities and nights, then check each rail leg before reserving accommodation. Use a country map to understand direction, a route guide to compare journey choices, and the dated search result to confirm the actual service. These sources answer different questions: a network line does not establish a departure available to book.

Next choose the required flexibility and compare the total cost for everyone travelling, including the bags and seats you need. Finally plan the city transfers and keep the issued e-ticket accessible. For a first visit, fewer bases usually make it easier to accommodate arrival formalities, hotel check-in and a delayed train than an itinerary with a different city every day.

Understand the different train services

Renfe operates several products. AVE and Avlo are high-speed brands, with different luggage allowances and fare conditions. Alvia combines high-speed and conventional sections on some routes. Euromed serves the Mediterranean corridor, including Barcelona–Valencia. Avant provides medium-distance high-speed services, while Media Distancia and regional trains serve other intercity journeys.

Cercanías and Barcelona's Rodalies are local rail networks. They can help you reach a station or nearby destination, but a long-distance ticket does not automatically cover every local train or metro ride. Check whether a specific local connection is included and how to obtain its ticket. Avlo does not include Combinado Cercanías.

iryo and OUIGO España operate high-speed services on selected corridors. Availability differs by route and date. Start with our Spain High-Speed Trains: AVE, Avlo, iryo & OUIGO, then use the Renfe vs iryo vs OUIGO: Prices, Luggage & Tickets to assess luggage, flexibility and the total fare.

Choose routes and stations together

  • Madrid–Barcelona: high-speed journeys commonly connect Madrid Puerta de Atocha–Almudena Grandes and Barcelona Sants. Compare the actual duration and stops.
  • Madrid–Seville and Madrid–Málaga: common high-speed station pairs use Atocha with Sevilla Santa Justa or Málaga María Zambrano.
  • Madrid–Valencia and Madrid–Alicante: many services use Madrid Chamartín–Clara Campoamor. Confirm the station for your specific operator and departure.
  • Barcelona–Valencia: Renfe advertises Euromed between Barcelona Sants and València Joaquín Sorolla. A search result involving Madrid may be a connecting itinerary.

Atocha and Chamartín are separate stations. València Joaquín Sorolla and València Nord are also distinct. Do not plan a connection using the city name alone. Our Madrid Train Stations: Atocha, Chamartín & Transfers explains the practical difference; leave room for getting between stations, security and boarding.

Compare the complete ticket before paying

Compare the departure and arrival times, named stations, changes of train, luggage, seat selection and change or cancellation conditions. Promotional prices are limited offers rather than fares available on every departure. Booking earlier can increase your choice, but it does not guarantee the lowest price, and sale-opening dates vary.

For journeys involving separate tickets, allow a realistic connection buffer and check what assistance applies if a delay causes a missed train. Do not assume that one operator will accept another operator's ticket. Follow the issuing seller's procedure if you need to change a booking.

Prepare for boarding

Carry the issued ticket and valid identification matching the passenger name. Save the ticket so you can display its readable barcode without relying on station Wi-Fi. Check your carriage and seat, the station screens and any service notices.

Allow time for security and boarding: 30 minutes at the station is a useful starting point, with more time for an unfamiliar station or assistance needs. OUIGO requires passengers at the boarding area at least 30 minutes before departure and closes access five minutes before. Renfe access control and iryo doors close two minutes before departure. These cutoffs are not arrival targets.

Booking through SpanishTrain

SpanishTrain, operated by WISE UP LIMITED, is an independent booking intermediary. Available search results do not represent every operator or departure. Its current booking service accepts adults aged 18 or older, with a maximum of four passengers per booking.

Payment is followed by manual review and fulfilment; it is not an issued travel ticket. Check that you have received the official operator e-ticket and that its date, stations and passengers are correct before travelling. See Spain Train Luggage, E-Tickets & Boarding Guide for the booking steps.

FAQ

How far ahead can I book?

Sale-opening dates vary by operator, route and timetable period. A missing departure may not be on sale yet; check the relevant operator before treating it as sold out.

Can children travel by train in Spain?

Operators offer child tickets under their own age and seating rules. SpanishTrain currently accepts only passengers aged 18 or older, so families with minors should use a suitable operator channel.

Does payment confirm my SpanishTrain journey?

No. Payment is followed by manual review and fulfilment. Travel only with the issued operator ticket, after checking its passenger and journey details.

What is the best way to plan a first Spain rail trip?

Choose a manageable number of bases, check the dated trains between them and allow for station transfers before fixing hotels and timed visits.

Does a Spain train map show trains available to book?

No. A map shows network geography. Use a date-specific timetable or live search to confirm operators, stations, changes and availability.
