The best first rail route in Spain is one that fits your arrival city, departure city and available nights. These four editorial options prioritise time in each destination and a small number of hotel changes. They are suggestions, not live timetables, fare quotations or promises that every operator serves every leg.
Choose a route by the trip you want to take
For a two-city break, focus on one intercity leg and spend the remaining time in the destinations. For a multi-city first visit, choose bases with enough nights to explore without moving bags every morning. For an Andalusia trip, decide whether Córdoba is an overnight or a separate visit before buying the rail legs.
If scenery is your priority, research the specific route and season rather than assuming every high-speed journey offers the same view. A route being convenient does not make it a dedicated scenic railway product. Compare the dated service, arrival time and local transfers, then use the detailed route guide for the stations and ticket choices.
Four manageable choices
| Route | Suggested stay | Choose it for |
|---|---|---|
| Madrid to Barcelona Train: Tickets, Prices & Stations | Five days, four nights: two in each city | Two major-city bases and one intercity transfer. The order can follow your flights. |
| Madrid, Córdoba & Seville by Train: 6-Day Itinerary | Six days, five nights: two in Madrid, one in Córdoba, two in Seville | A dedicated Córdoba stay between the capital and Andalucía. |
| Barcelona to Valencia Train: Tickets, Prices & Euromed | Five days, four nights: two in each city | Two Mediterranean cities without routing your whole trip through Madrid. |
| Madrid to Málaga Train: Tickets, Prices & Connections | Five days, four nights: two in each city | A capital-city stay followed by Málaga; plan any beach or coastal transfer separately. |
These night counts assume departure on the final day and do not include a return journey to your original city. For a full week across three bases, use the Spain by Train in 7 Days: Barcelona, Madrid & Seville.
Choose by logistics before scenery
Madrid–Barcelona services commonly connect Atocha and Barcelona Sants. Madrid–Seville and Madrid–Málaga commonly connect Atocha with Santa Justa or María Zambrano. Always confirm the station on the chosen departure. Renfe advertises Euromed on Barcelona–Valencia; it should not simply be labelled an AVE route. For the Valencia arrival, check your dated ticket and ADIF’s station-work notice, which redirects conventional-gauge services to Estació del Nord.
Compare the dated itinerary's duration and stops rather than an old fastest-time claim. Train windows do not guarantee a particular view, and routes along Spain's northern coast should not be treated as a quick continuous high-speed trip. If northern Spain is your priority, build a separate itinerary from verified daily connections.
Before you commit to a route
- Check all legs: confirm departures, stations and accommodation before combining the trip. Separate tickets do not automatically provide missed-connection protection.
- Book planned stops: a ticket for a particular train does not allow an all-day stopover followed by any later departure. Reserve appropriate legs for each overnight or sightseeing stop.
- Include local travel: check the route from station to hotel and any coastal or attraction transfer. Do not assume the old town is beside the station.
- Arrange bags: compare operator luggage limits and confirm storage availability and collection hours with a hotel or provider.
- Compare the final price: include extras and flexibility. Earlier booking and a low-cost brand do not guarantee the lowest total fare.
