Madrid Train Stations: Atocha, Chamartín & Transfers

Madrid Train Stations: Atocha, Chamartín & Transfers

Madrid Puerta de Atocha–Almudena Grandes and Madrid Chamartín–Clara Campoamor are different stations. Use the station on each selected train and issued ticket, checking outward and return separately. If arrival and next departure stations differ, plan the local transfer and boarding margin. ADIF: Atocha · ADIF: Chamartín

Use the Madrid station printed on your selected train and issued ticket. Madrid Puerta de Atocha–Almudena Grandes and Madrid Chamartín–Clara Campoamor are separate terminals. A city name or a general rule about travelling north or south is not enough to choose between them. Check the outward and return journeys independently, particularly when comparing operators or booking a connection.

Atocha to Chamartín: plan a transfer between two stations

Read the arrival station on the first ticket and the departure station on the second. If they differ, build a separate local transfer into the itinerary, including finding the correct exit, buying or validating a local ticket, the journey itself and the next train’s boarding process. A connection labelled “Madrid” is not enough information to establish a workable transfer.

For Madrid airport access, start with your flight terminal and follow the airport’s current transport information. Choose Atocha or Chamartín from the onward rail ticket rather than from a generic city-centre route. With separate flight and rail bookings, leave room for arrivals formalities and disruption instead of using the fastest published local ride as the whole connection time.

Madrid Chamartín–Clara CampoamorCalle Agustín de Foxá, in northern Madrid; Metro lines 1 and 10 and Cercanías.Follow current access signs and departure information during the station’s redevelopment.

ADIF publishes official information for Atocha and Chamartín. Save the complete station name in your map app. If a hotel description says “near the station”, establish which terminal it means before planning your departure.

Choose from the actual train

For Madrid to Barcelona Train: Tickets, Prices & Stations or Madrid to Valencia Train: Tickets, Prices & Stations, read the station in each result rather than transferring an assumption from a previous journey. In particular, do not assume all Valencia or Alicante services leave from Atocha. Operator, service and operating arrangements matter. A guide to the city cannot guarantee the departure station of a future train.

Before paying, record the date, departure time, station, train number and any changes. Compare the total fare and conditions as well as the journey time. After the official ticket arrives, compare those details again; a payment confirmation is not the document to use for boarding.

Changing between Atocha and Chamartín

Check a current Cercanías journey or another local transport option for your arrival time. A station transfer includes leaving the first train, finding the local service, waiting, travelling and reaching the next boarding area. The time spent on the local train is only one part of the connection. Allow extra space for luggage, assistance and disruption; no single minimum transfer time suits every itinerary.

Check whether the tickets provide connection protection and whether any local entitlement is included. Separate purchases should not be treated as one guaranteed connection. If the available interval looks tight, compare a later departure or an itinerary using the same Madrid terminal.

Arriving from Madrid–Barajas Airport

The airport railway serves Terminal T4. Aena’s airport rail information describes the connection with Madrid; check current Renfe notices for the actual service and any changes needed. If your flight uses another terminal, include the terminal transfer. Add time for arrival formalities, luggage collection and reaching your onward train.

Boarding, bags and assistance

Use the operator’s boarding instructions and live station displays. Keep the official ticket and required identification accessible. Read the Spain Train Luggage, E-Tickets & Boarding Guide before packing: luggage allowances belong to the train fare, not the station. Arrange required assistance for the specific journey. Check current opening hours and any storage service before relying on them; save tickets offline so station Wi-Fi is unnecessary.

For choosing fares and checking the final booking, see How to Book Spain Train Tickets & Compare Fares. Official station and airport sources reviewed on 11 October 2026; service notices can change before departure.

FAQ

Can I board at either Madrid station?

No. Use the station on your issued ticket. Atocha and Chamartín are separate terminals, and your train may not stop at both.

Do all Madrid–Valencia trains leave from Atocha?

No. Check the specific service and issued ticket; do not assign a station from the destination alone.

Does my ticket include the airport or station transfer?

Only rely on local travel that your fare explicitly includes and whose validation conditions you can meet.

Are Atocha and Chamartín within the same station?

No. They are separate Madrid stations. If your tickets use different terminals, plan and check the local transfer before purchasing a tight connection.

Which Madrid station should I use for a train to Barcelona?

Follow the exact station shown for the dated departure and on the issued ticket. The route guide explains the usual station pair, but it does not override your itinerary.
