Spain Train Luggage, E-Tickets & Boarding Guide

Spain Train Luggage, E-Tickets & Boarding Guide

Check the exact operator, product and fare; measure each bag and verify the permitted size, weight and item count. Extra luggage cannot be added to every fare; special items need separate acceptance checks before payment. iryo · Renfe Avlo · OUIGO España

There is no single luggage allowance or boarding deadline for every train in Spain. Identify the operator and fare on your issued ticket, then check each bag against that product’s rules. In particular, iryo’s conditions dated 24 September 2026 distinguish sharply between Inicial and fares that allow a large suitcase.

Prepare the e-ticket and luggage before leaving the hotel

Open the issued operator e-ticket and check the date, station, train and passenger details while you still have a reliable connection. Save a readable copy and keep identification accessible. A screenshot of an order status or bank payment is not a substitute for the travel document required by the operator.

Measure the suitcase you intend to bring rather than relying on the label “cabin bag”. Check the exact fare’s permitted item count, dimensions and weight, and whether extra luggage can be purchased for that product. Pack so you can handle the bags during the station transfer and board within the operator’s instructions. For unusual items, verify acceptance before buying the rail fare.

Ticket delivery: what you need to board

A SpanishTrain payment creates a request for manual review. The order reference or payment receipt is not the railway ticket. Wait for the official operator-issued document; no fixed delivery time is guaranteed. Check names, train number, date, local time, stations and seats, and save the document for offline access. Follow its instructions about display or printing, and carry the valid identification required by the operator. The current SpanishTrain flow accepts adults aged 18 or older, up to four passengers per order.

Luggage comparison by product

ProductIncluded allowance and key check
Renfe AVE / long-distanceUp to three pieces, 25 kg combined and a combined dimensional total of 290 cm. Each piece must be no larger than 85 × 55 × 35 cm. Avlo is a separate product.
Renfe AvloOne hand bag, 36 × 27 × 25 cm, and one cabin suitcase, 55 × 35 × 25 cm. Check the separately priced extra-luggage option before booking.
iryo InicialTwo pieces: 36 × 27 × 15 cm and 55 × 35 × 25 cm. The current conditions do not allow purchase of additional luggage for Inicial.
Other iryo faresInicial Superior can add an 80 × 55 × 35 cm case for a charge. Infinita allows that case to be reserved at purchase without a charge; Infinita Bistró includes all three pieces. Read the selected fare carefully.
OUIGO SpainOne hand bag, 36 × 27 × 15 cm, and one cabin suitcase, 55 × 35 × 25 cm. An extra item, when purchased or included in the selected package, is limited to 200 cm summed dimensions and 25 kg.

These are operator conditions, not a promise that every extra can be purchased through SpanishTrain. If a required option is absent from the offer, resolve it before payment.

Arrival time and boarding closure

OUIGO Spain asks passengers to be at the boarding area at least 30 minutes before departure and closes access five minutes before. iryo opens boarding 30 minutes before and closes doors two minutes before. Renfe’s published access-control deadline is two minutes before departure. A closure time is not an arrival recommendation: leave extra time for finding the station entrance, baggage screening, ticket checks and platform access, and follow the instructions for your exact service.

Large items and luggage storage

Bicycles, sports equipment, instruments and pets have separate conditions. Do not assume that buying an extra bag permits every special item or that a folded bicycle is always free. Check packaging, size, weight and any booking requirement with the operator before purchase. Store accepted bags only in appropriate racks and luggage areas; keep aisles and exits clear. Never force a heavy or oversized case into an overhead rack. Station left-luggage services are separate and should be checked before relying on them.

FAQ

Can I take a large suitcase with iryo Inicial?

The current Inicial allowance is a small bag plus a cabin suitcase; its conditions do not permit purchasing extra luggage. Choose a suitable fare before payment.

Can I arrive at the boarding-closure time?

No. Allow time for finding the boarding area and completing checks; follow the operator’s advance-arrival instructions.

Can I travel using my SpanishTrain payment confirmation?

No. You need the official operator-issued ticket and required identification.

Can I use a bank payment confirmation to board a train?

No. Keep the issued travel ticket and the identification required by the operator. A bank receipt does not replace the ticket.

Do AVE, Avlo, iryo and OUIGO share a luggage allowance?

No. Check the named product and fare. Included items, size limits and the ability to purchase extra luggage can differ.
