Spain Train Refunds & Changes: Renfe, iryo, OUIGO

For a voluntary change or cancellation, check fare rules, deadline, complete cost and confirmation through the seller. A request is not a completed change or refund. Assess disruption rights separately. The printed date is the diagram’s original editorial date, not a guarantee that ticket rules remain unchanged. Renfe: cambios · Renfe: anulaciones
A train’s seat class does not determine whether its ticket is refundable. Changes and cancellations depend on the operator, fare, optional extras, sales channel and request deadline. Start with the conditions attached to your own ticket. A voluntary change of plan and an operator cancellation are different cases.
Voluntary cancellation and an operator-cancelled train
First identify why the journey is changing. A passenger choosing not to travel, a request to move to another departure and an operator cancelling a service are different situations. Record the train, departure time, fare name and selling channel before contacting the party that can service the booking.
Ask for the applicable deadline and an explanation of the refund, voucher, change fee and fare difference before accepting a proposal. Sending a request does not prove that a ticket was cancelled or that money was refunded. Keep the confirmation of the completed action, and check the new issued ticket if a change is made. Rights arising from disruption should be checked separately from the fare’s voluntary-cancellation rules.
Renfe: Básico, Elige and Prémium
Renfe currently permits one change to Básico for €10 plus any higher fare difference, requested at least 24 hours before the original departure. Básico normally does not allow voluntary cancellation. Elige includes a first change without a change fee, although a higher fare difference remains payable; later changes cost €10 plus that difference. Its standard cancellation refund is 70%. Prémium’s included Reembolso total returns 100% when canceled at least seven days before departure and 95% during the final six calendar days. Ticket-specific extras and special exceptions may alter the result; do not promise an unconditional full refund.
Avlo has separate rules
Avlo’s basic ticket does not include changes or cancellation. Its optional change/cancellation supplement must be selected when buying the ticket; the published price is €8. It permits one change or cancellation until 30 minutes before departure, with a higher fare difference payable on a change. Check the exact refund basis and any excluded extras in the applicable terms rather than applying AVE Básico or Elige rules to Avlo.
iryo: read the exact fare name
Inicial is non-refundable. iryo’s fare information lists a same-day change for Inicial at €15 plus any fare difference; other products have different flexibility and availability conditions. Do not confuse changing time on the same day, changing the travel date and canceling: these are separate permissions. Review the rules and cutoff of Inicial, Inicial Superior, Espacio Silencio, Infinita or Infinita Bistró as actually selected. A premium seat or meal does not by itself prove full refundability.
OUIGO Spain: PLUS is not FLEX
OUIGO PLUS adds services such as extra luggage and seat selection, but it does not automatically include FLEX or cancellation. FLEX removes the change fee; a positive fare difference can still apply. OUIGO FULL includes FLEX and the refundable-ticket option. Under the published refundable option, cancellation until 30 minutes before departure returns 80% of the eligible amount to the original payment method or 100% as a non-refundable voucher valid for 12 months. Check eligible amounts, excluded extras and distributor conditions. These are Spain products; French OUIGO conditions are different.
Request a change through your selling channel
- Find your order reference, operator ticket, fare and desired new journey. Check the deadline before contacting support.
- For a SpanishTrain order, send the request through the contact channel and quote the order reference. A paid request still awaiting manual issuance must be checked before you assume a seat exists or a cancellation is complete.
- Ask for the proposed change cost or refund breakdown, including fare difference, deductions and any applicable service fees.
- Wait for explicit confirmation. An email request alone does not change or cancel a ticket; retain any replacement travel document. Refund timing also depends on the operator, payment provider and bank.
If the operator cancels or substantially delays the service
Disruption rights are separate from a voluntary refund request. Consult the operator and the EU rail passenger-rights guidance for the actual circumstances, including any applicable scope and exceptions. A non-refundable fare label does not by itself remove statutory rights. Keep the ticket, disruption notice and relevant receipts; do not apply airline compensation rules to rail travel.
